Long-Term Groundwater Quality Monitoring at NAS Corpus Christi

Adanta has performed long-term monitoring (LTM) for groundwater at Fuel Farm 216 and Solid Waste Management Units (SWMUs) 1 and 5 Sites in addition to demolition of the old treatment system at Fuel Farm 216 and demolition of the SWMU 1 Treatment System Building.

During its operation, the Fuel Farm 216 consisted of thirty-six 25,000-gallon underground storage tanks containing aviation gasoline. The Fuel Farm operated from the early 1940s until closure in 1986. The tanks were closed in place and backfilled with sand and cement in 1987. Recovery of LNAPL began with pumping and bailing of wells until a multi-phase extraction system was constructed and put into operation in 1997. The system is not in operation today and was to be demolished. SWMU 1 is the Defense Property Disposal Office (DPDO) Landfill. This area reportedly operated from 1949 through the early 1960s. It encompasses approximately 13 acres and was reportedly used for the disposal of bulk chemicals including organic solvents, sulfuric and hydrochloric acids, paint removers and thinners, and plating waste. Some wastes were disposed of in open, shallow trenches and included wood, rubber, small amounts of asphalt, brick fragments, tile, broken shingles, glass, melted aluminum and general solid waste. SWMU 5 is Building 8 is leased by Corpus Christi Army Depot for the U.S. Army’s Material and Readiness Command. Operations there include depot-level maintenance of Army aircraft and aeronautical equipment, training of military personnel in depot-level maintenance, and preparing aircraft for overseas shipment. Industrial activities conducted in the Building 8 complex include plating operations, parts cleaning and degreasing, bulk fuel storage and painting.

Adanta conducted semi-annual groundwater monitoring at Fuel Farm 216 from 18 well locations. Samples were collected and analyzed for MTBE, VOAs, and total petroleum hydrocarbons. Semi-annual groundwater monitoring and sampling was conducted at SWMUs 1 and 5 at eight and four well locations, respectively. Samples were analyzed for VOCs. Adanta prepared and submitted the annual groundwater monitoring reports for Fuel Farm 216 and for SWMUs 1 and 5 for each year of monitoring i.e. 2019 through 2022.

Under this task order, Adanta demolished the old LNAPL treatment system at Fuel Farm 216 made up of various old equipment, tanks, pipes and connections that were heavily corroded and falling apart. Confirmation samples were taken from the thermal oxidizer to confirm the absence of asbestos and that normal disposal was appropriate. Adanta also demolished the SWMU 1 Treatment System. Adanta removed all equipment, demolished the building and its foundation, and grouted pipelines leading to or from the old building foundation. The surface was restored to match the surrounding vegetation.

As part of this project, Adanta also conducted the plat survey for SWMU 2 and SWMU 4 (IR Sites 3 and 4) for completing the documentation required for the closure of the sites.

Adanta is currently finalizing the 2022 annual monitoring reports for Fuel Farm 216 and SWMU 1 and SWMU 5 Sites based on the TCEQ comments. The project is anticipated to be completed in September 2023.
